Tellus

IMG_1167 IMG_1172 IMG_1176

Some new finds (the yellow glass bottle is “Tellus” by Erkkitapio Siiroinen, it has the world map on the surface) and plants, but otherwise nothing much is new. Stuff has kept me busy! Hopefully things will start to get organized soon, so I’ll have more time for hobbies… 🙂

*

Joitakin uusia löytöjĂ€ (keltainen pullo on Erkkitapio Siiroisen Tellus, jossa on maailmankartta pinnalla) ja kasveja, mutta muuten ei paljon erityistĂ€ olekaan tapahtunut, paitsi ettĂ€ on ollut tuhoton kiire! Toivottavasti hommat alkaa pian sutviintua, jotta olis taas aikaa harrastaa… 🙂

1 minute DIY linen cushion covers

IMG_1013

I hesitate to call this a DIY since it’s so simple! There’s no sewing, no glueing, no nothing really! All you need are some linen pillowcases (mine are from H&M, 50×60 cm) and cushions (f.e. Ikea, 50×50 cm). Slip the cushion inside the pillowcase and fold the excess in (like you would on an old, straight pillowcase)! All done! 🙂

You can secure the ends with safety needles if you feel it’s necessary, but I think they hold well just folded in.

*

olkkarissa

IMG_0979

I wanted to create a light, airy, white space, but I really like graphic elements and colors, too. This is what my living room looks like right now! But oh my, it’s not easy to create the feeling of space into 41 sqm… It’s a slippery slope from cool stuff and nifty knick-knacks to clutter!

*

IMG_0996

Like the corner here. I like to sit or read and sip on tea here, so I need a place for my cup. The boxes from Hay are filling that purpose, but they seem too bulky and eat the space up. So I’m fantasizing of a smaller table… If I don’t happen to run into anything suitable used, I might have to splurge on a Hay DLM. 🙂

*

IMG_0994

On the other side of the chair is a DIY inspired by the Muuto OTO 100. It’s handy for magazines and whatnot, but it tends to get cluttered like crazy! It’s too easy to just stuff it with whatever I have in my hand at any time! Open shelving needs to be curated or it’s no good! 🙂

*

Toisella puolella tuolia on Muuton OTO 100:n inspiroima DIY.

IMG_0980

It’s helpful to take pictures every now and then. Living here, my eyes tend to glide over unfinished stuff, like the Vee Speers poster and other artwork waiting to be hung, but in pics they jump right at me! 🙂

*

Kuvien ottaminen auttaa sisustamisessa. SilmĂ€ jotenkin oppii pĂ€ivittĂ€isessĂ€ olossa vĂ€lttĂ€mÀÀn viimeistelemĂ€ttömĂ€t hommat, kuten nyt tuon Vee Speersin julisteen ja muita ripustamattomia juttuja, mutta kuvista ne hyppÀÀvĂ€t silmille heti! 🙂

IMG_0982

That wicker basket used to be a wine carafe holder, but I’m planning to add strings to it and make it a hanging planter. It’s just waiting for the right string… 🙂

*

Rottinkikori oli viinikarahvin pidike, mutta suunnittelen ettĂ€ siitĂ€ tulisi kukalle amppeli, kunhan lisÀÀn siihen kantonarut. Toistaiseksi se kuitenkin odottelee, ettĂ€ löytĂ€isin oikeanlaiset narut.. 🙂

laatuaikaa aamulla

IMG_0938

I have to be honest here: I rarely manage to eat breakfast. Busy, busy, late, late, what on earth am I gonna wear – breakfast feels less important than whatever it is I’m supposedly busy with. So when I actually do manage to prepare a breakfast AND enjoy it without haste, it feels super luxurious!

*

Ollaanpas rehellisiĂ€: yleensĂ€ en ehdi syödĂ€ aamupalaa. On kiire, kiire, oon jo myöhĂ€ssĂ€, mitĂ€ ihmettĂ€ pistĂ€n pÀÀlleni – eihĂ€n siinĂ€ hötĂ€kĂ€ssĂ€ jaksa miettiĂ€ aamupalaa. Joten silloin kun saan aikaiseksi sekĂ€ valmistaa ETTÄ nauttia kiireettömĂ€n aamupalan, se tuntuu tosi ylelliseltĂ€!

IMG_0945 IMG_0947 IMG_0948 IMG_0950

There’s ready-made lemon curd, which is very good, and self-made orange marmalade, which, although it didn’t end up like traditional marmalade, is pretty good! There’s a nice caramelly taste to it… but next time, I think I’ll try to boil the mixture a bit less, since I think the caramel flavor comes from burnt sugar! 🙂

*

Siihen tuli kiva karamellinen sivumaku. Ensi kerralla pitÀÀ yrittÀÀ keittÀÀ seosta vĂ€hĂ€n vĂ€hemmĂ€n. Luultavasti maku johtuu palaneesta sokerista! 🙂

IMG_0951

Also, I would love to have a juicer! Mmm, all the lovely fresh juices I could drink… not just fruits either, veggie juices are awesome too! But where would I put it in my small space, and would I even use it that often…

*

Olispas muuten kiva hommata mehukone!

green and copper

IMG_0903

Ah, copper. I’m definitely warming to you! The dark nights and the thought of fall approaching have found me lighting candles and adding warmer colors in the mix. This little pot (3 euros from a charity shop) fit the bill nicely indeed!

*

Kupari, kupari. TÀmÀ kupariruukku (3 euroa kirpparilta) sopi tunnelmaan loistavasti!

IMG_0912

Funny how that happens, the copper pot started the ball rolling and soon I was fretting over the other colors in my home! I started by turning the pillows over, so they would go better with my new mental interior image… Now I need new covers for them! I know they don’t look that bad in the photos, but sitting right next to them, the backsides aren’t all that great.. 🙂

*

Kupariruukku laukaisi ketjureaktion. 🙂

IMG_0917 IMG_0926IMG_0923

Also, how great is that glass thing?! It was love at first sight! I just loved the shape which reminded me of some of Nanny Still’s designs… But now that I browsed a Finnish antique sellers’ site, I think it’s an Iittala candle holder “2660” by Erkki Vesanto. Nice! 🙂

The jar is made in Denmark by Bing&Gröndahl. I don’t know anything about Danish porcelain, but it was another cool shape, and the glace is the prettiest blackish blue!

*

IMG_0927

But what on earth is that orange box under the sofa? Well, there’s a note in the hallway that some people have spotted moths in my building, and I’m trying to find out if I have them/poison them if I do. So far, so good – nothing trapped in the orange pheromone-glue trap. Or does that only show that the moths aren’t interested in the artificial pheromones? Hmmm…

*

Mutta mikĂ€ ihme tuo oranssi rasia sohvan alla on? No, kĂ€ytĂ€vĂ€ssĂ€ on lappu ettĂ€ jotkut meidĂ€n rapussa on nĂ€hneet asunnoissaan koita.

oriental influences

IMG_0897 IMG_0896IMG_0898

So I’ve begun to feel like I needed warmer colors and a heartier feeling in my home. I switched out the white metal kitchen chairs to teak and black leather, found a few brass and copper items from the recycling center and added a lot of candles. Yesterday I had some free time and went for a walk in Kallio, the promised ‘hood of all the hipsters and artsy types… and found these on the curb!!

I’ve been thinking about a leather pouf for ages, but the real Moroccan poufs are expensive, so I’ve been putting it off. This Finnish version, on the other hand, was free! Also, the carpet will add nice, spicy colors into my home. What a lucky day! 🙂

*

Olipas onnekas sattuma! 🙂

goutweed / vuohenputket

IMG_9943IMG_9929  IMG_9939  IMG_9956 IMG_9965IMG_9957  IMG_9932IMG_9967 IMG_9970 IMG_9973

Wild flowers are a midsummer staple and great for indoors and out! For something that’s considered weeds, goutweeds are pretty awesome: beautiful, ecological (no pesticides, fertilizers or transport) and free! The leaves are also edible as wild herbs in the spring, I’ve used them in sallads, soups and stews. The taste is mildly spinachey when the leaves are young, but now that they’re in bloom the taste goes sharp and the plant much woodier. I’ve read that they also have mild sedative effects in bigger quantities (haven’t experienced this, but I’ve been careful to use them only for taste) and have been used to treat gout as poultices, hence the name…

*

Aiemmin vuohenputkea on kĂ€ytetty kihdin hoitoon kipeĂ€n nivelen kÀÀreenĂ€…

herb garden

IMG_9831 IMG_9834 IMG_9843 IMG_9847 IMG_9848 IMG_9849 IMG_9851 IMG_9860

Found some of these herb mugs I’ve bought ages ago from Ikea and decided to plant them as well (the metal containers are a similar Ikea herb set). I’m so excited to see them grow! The coriander, thyme and basil have already grewn quite a lot, and now I added oregano, lemon balm (melissa) and parsley. They say watching plants calms people down and I for one can vouch for that 🙂

The herbs went outside after they sprouted, but I had to take them back in and grow them under my green light. There’s tons of bugs out, the small, green kind that suck juices out of my little herbs! I tried to take a pic of one, sitting under a basil leaf here:

IMG_9863

They even come inside, when I have the door open. So far, I’ve been combating them by physically removing the ones I see, but that takes a lot of effort. So I’m out for a poison… Plus, my violets and hydrangeas are full of those buggers also, so I’d like to find something that works both inside and out. 🙂

IMG_9861

Aaaand yes, that violet is in serious need of a new planter! 😀

on the shelf

IMG_9827 IMG_9829 IMG_9830

IMG_9818

The shelf went on the wall a while ago, but the shelves themselves are still untreated. They’re waiting for me to fix the sander situation… Namely, to beg, borrow or steal one (no worries, I’m not really gonna steal it!) so I could start waiting for the motivation to begin sanding! 🙂

While the shelves wait to be treated with sandpaper and wax, I’ve been playing with stuff to put on them… and trying to take better-looking photos of the results. So far, so good, but there’s still a long way to go for getting them to look more pro!

Anyway, this green theme is a favorite so far, and I’m pretty happy with the photos too! 🙂
